WHY DOES IT MATTER WHERE A PRODUCT IS MADE AND WHO IT IS MADE BY?
The coronavirus pandemic and the UK’s departure from the EU have presented challenges for many industries across the country and highlighted the importance of sustainable UK manufacturing. We want to highlight some of the all-important advantages of choosing a UK manufacturer for your lighting requirements and the environmental benefits this can bring.
Our independent and dynamic engineering company, working in the heart of Somerset, specialises in lighting design and manufacture. Being based in the UK enables us to consistently provide high quality products and exceptional service, whilst promoting a greener future.
Design and production are undertaken in-house and under one roof, both of which are beneficial when establishing lead times. Furthermore, delivery times can be significantly reduced when there is less distance to travel, and this has a further impact on reducing lead times compared to overseas manufacturers. With less time in transit and reduced handling, there is also less likelihood of products arriving at their destination damaged.
Conducting our business in the UK means we are exposed to less supply chain risk and are better positioned to take on smaller minimum order quantities or bespoke projects. Having complete control over our production operations enables us to set our own high standards, which is reflected in the quality of our finished products. We are also ISO 9001:2015 certified, ensuring we have the best practices and standards in place, allowing us to provide optimum and consistent service to all our clients.
We are striving to meet sustainability targets in line with the Government’s plan for the UK to become ‘net zero’ by 2050. UK manufacturing significantly decreases the mileage a product has to travel and in turn, the fuel required and resulting carbon emissions. Building our products on British soil lowers our company’s carbon footprint and reduces the impact on the environment. We even drive electric cars to reduce our own carbon emissions on the commute to and from work.
One of our criteria for sourcing components is seeking to maximise the amount of recycled material they contain. Many of our products are made from aluminium that can be endlessly recycled without losing its quality or beneficial properties.
As well as using sustainable materials in our products, we also monitor and reduce our energy consumption.
In our factory, we have installed our own high-efficiency lighting systems that feature PIR motion sensors to prevent unnecessary energy wastage, and we have access to renewable energy through our rooftop solar panels.
The main production areas are heated with a wood-burning module system using clean waste wood to save fuel and waste disposal costs.
We have adapted our factory to include a recycling system for all recyclable materials, including paper, plastic, cardboard, packaging and waste aluminium. We are committed to improving efficiency and passionate about developing new ways to reduce our impact on the planet.
Being UK based makes it easy to monitor our business practices, and those of our key suppliers, and provide you with a higher quality service.
With over 100 years of collective experience in the lighting industry, we are among the leading providers of bespoke lighting systems throughout the UK since 2009.
